LABORATORIES

GLAXOSMITHKLINE (MPS FACILITY EXPANSION)

Final Contract: $4,326,000 (Sept 2006-Aug 2007)

This project was an expansion of the existing GSK facilities in Hamilton. Eight new buildings were added to the existing facilities to support the new manufacturing facilities that were assembled on the site as well as additional laboratories and administrative space. This project included upgrades to the existing 3,000-amp electrical service, three new 4,000-amp electrical services, a new 2,000-KW generator, a new 500-KW generator, and segregation of existing emergency loads to the new emergency power systems. This project also consisted of a new campus wide fire alarm system, a new campus wide security system, a complete lightning protection system, and a new telecommunications cabling system. A new 80-KW UPS and a new 40-KW UPS were installed for the uninterruptible power systems. The project also included HVAC controls, process monitoring and controls, convenience power, typical lighting, a lighting control system, and a large amount of equipment connections and equipment controls.

This project had a total duration of only thirteen months. To complete the project this quickly, including an enormous number of changes and additions throughout the project, planning and coordination was critical. All subcontractors, along with the general contractor and owner representatives, conducted weekly coordination meetings throughout the project. The coordination process also included CAD 3D coordination drawings to predict and resolve installation conflicts. The process worked well and ultimately we feel the project was a huge success for all parties involved in the construction process.
